On 29th August, TEP-TEPE went on its bi-annual cultural tour to familiarise our foreign students with the history and cultural aspects of the country. This term the students went to Lopiburi Province, north of the Thammasat Rangsit Campus to visit the historical remnants of the area. Also this year, the students received an in-depth engineering perspective of how everything was made during the period of King Narai and the restoration processes followed by the successors to the throne.

The trip started early morning with the first stop at Phranarai School at Lopburi, where parts of the water system used for King Narai’s palace are showcased. Due to the limitations of the time, earthen laterite pipes were made to carry water from two nearby water reservoirs to supply water to the palace. These pipes were buried deep underground and can still be found in places if dug. Students and teachers from the Phranarai School joined to explain the historical importance of the water system.

After the historical site, the students visited a marl workshop where they learned the process of refining and working with the mineral, and trying out the age old traditional art themselves.

Following lunch, it was time for Wichayen House, or the Official Residence for Ambassadors to King Narai. The students toured the whole complex and learned about the immigration of construction techniques and materials like cements from the west.

Last stop in the historical sites list was King Narai’s Palace and the Phra Narai National Museum. Although it was a hot day, and everyone was at their tiring stage, they eagerly learned about the different architectural styles incorporated in the palace that involved the creative mixture of Persian, French and Thai styles all in one place.

On the way back, a stop at Talad Luang Pu Thuat allowed everyone to refresh themselves and head back to the university.
